Vermiculite, seen in the top picture, which is generally found in attics, but occasionally in walls too, often has an asbestos content.
In the lower picture, the white duct wrap, contains asbestos too.
Any home built around 1990 or earlier, may have asbestos content in components such as drywall, drywall mud, exterior siding, floor tiles or linoleum, ceiling tiles and so on. Generally, in any renovations, you are responsible for the safety of any contractors or others, working for you on site. Workplace BC takes a dim view of folks who fail to test for asbestos, before allowing contractors to start. (Think substantial financial penalties - which can increase exponentially if a worker gets sick as a result). You may also get a stop work order. Annoying, as you can end up paying for contractors to sit around idle, whilst you get things sorted out.
